Nova Scotia's injury rates are among the highest in the country. Injury hurts workers but it also hurts business. You pay for employees who aren't there, you pay to train their replacements, and your company pays for a poor reputation.
Sure, developing a policy, creating a committee, developing safe work practices and investing in training all takes money and time. But you know what? If it prevents even a single catastrophic incident, it will be the best money and time you ever spent. You don't want to follow an ambulance to the hospital. You don't want to make that walk to an employee's door.
Every year in Nova Scotia, injury costs millions. Downtime. Damaged equipment. Low morale. It all adds up - and those are only the business costs. What about the rec hockey games not played? The piggyback rides not given? The simple hugs that now hurt?
When you think about it, the question isn't why it matters. That's obvious.
The question really is, what are we going to do about it?
