Gr. 10-12 Learners: Online Safety Programs

To support Nova Scotia high school teachers and students with a variety of workplace health and safety learning approaches, the WCB often sponsors programs of other service providers to be used in the classroom. 

The following online resources have been reviewed by the NS Department of Education for allowable classroom use in the 2009-2010 school year:

Available to ALL teachers and students in Grades 10-12

  • Passport to Safety
    An interactive online health and safety awareness program that gives students opportunity to discover how informed they are about workplace health and safety matters.  Teachers log-in to the above site to access PIN numbers for student users, who will have life-long access to the program which results in a completion test and certificate suitable for LifeWork Portfolios and resumes.  

  • St. John Ambulance: LifeSmart First Aid Training
    An innovative and comprehensive First Aid Training Program designed for high-school students.  LifeSmart is the only program of its kind in Canada and was a collaborative effort between St. John Ambulance and the Nova Scotia Department of Education.  Teachers log-in to the above site to access PIN numbers for student users, who will have life-long access to the program which results in a provincially recognized completion test and certificate for Emergency First Aid, suitable for LifeWork Portfolios and resumes.

Available to teachers and students in Grades 10-12: Community Based Learning, Career Development, In-School Component of Co-Op, Workplace Health and Safety, and Technology Education programs

  • St. John Ambulance: Online WHMIS 
    SJA’s online Workplace Hazardous Materials & Information System (WHMIS) course provides participants with the skills necessary to access and apply the information needed to protect their health and safety while working with WHMIS controlled products.  Teachers log-in to the above site to access PIN numbers for student users, who will have life-long access to the program which results in a provincially recognized completion test and certificate for WHMIS, suitable for LifeWork Portfolios and resumes. 

Available to all youth

  • WCBNS HS-101
    Suitable for Gr. 9-12 students, HS-101 is a comprehensive introduction to workplace safety.  There is no testing required to move between topic modules, which some learners and educators prefer as study approach.
