Safety Matters

For many young workers, part-time and summer jobs looked different this year. In addition to learning job responsibilities and how to work safely, they also had to learn how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while on the job. 

WCB Nova Scotia and the Department of Labour and Advanced Education

, partnered with a Superstore store and Walmart store, in Halifax Regional Municipality to help educate young workers on Occupational Health & Safety in their work places. The events provided information on hazard identification, hazard controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) – a topic that is very important right now – in a safe, fun and interactive atmosphere. 

Following COVID-19 safety protocols, young workers visited four stations and took part in a quiz. Participants were asked if PPE was properly worn or missing, and to identify common hazards they may encounter at work and what control should be put in place. 

All left with a few takeaways including a Rights and Responsibility Card, hand sanitizer, and knowledge that will help them contribute to their workplace safety culture. 

“These events are beneficial to both young workers and their employers,” says Lise Jeffrey, Relationship Manager at WCB Nova Scotia. “The young workers receive knowledge that will help themselves and others stay safe at work, and employers can use the anonymous results of the quiz to ensure that their safety protocols are being received by workers.”
