Celebrating Safety Leadership with the Mainstay Awards

An exciting part of the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week in Nova Scotia this year is the Mainstay Awards. The Mainstay Awards recognize the individuals, organizations, labour groups and employers whose efforts have helped make Nova Scotia a safer place to work.

The awards program highlights the fact that safe workplaces don’t just happen, and creating a safety culture and safe workplaces is a journey that requires leadership and commitment. The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Halifax on May 6th. Stay tuned to @WorkSafeForLife on Twitter for real time updates on the winners.

The Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education created the Mainstay Awards to celebrate success in safety and to demonstrate how workplaces can become safer. This year, 10 awards in eight categories will be presented.

The name “Mainstay” reflects Nova Scotia’s seafaring heritage. In nautical terms, the mainstay braces the main mast on a sailing vessel – just as safety provides critical support in navigating through the business day.

Last year’s Mainstay Award winners were:

Safety Award of Excellence: Organization
Acadian Seaplants Limited

Safety Transformation
Oland Brewery

Employer Safety Champion
Dave’s Commercial Cleaning
Clearwater Seafoods Limited Partnership

Employer Return-to-Work Champion
Capital District Health Authority – Injury Prevention

Individual Safety Champion
Keith Robinson, MARCO Group
Mike O’Leary, Municipality of the County of Antigonish
Cecil Haughn, Hillside Pines HSC
Jane Power, Ivany Place, Northwood

Nova Scotia is seeing a steady reduction in the number of workplace injuries, yet every day people are still hurt on the job in our province, often seriously. And we continue to see people lose their lives in workplace incidents.

We have much more work to do. The Mainstay Awards reflect a common goal of eliminating workplace injuries and a recognition that even one injury is too many. With the Nova Scotia Workplace Safety Strategy, we have a shared action plan to continue reducing workplace injuries.
