10 ways to mark Safety and Health Week in your workplace

This year, May 1-6 is Safety and Health Week (formerly known as NAOSH Week) – a continent-wide initiative for employers, employees, safety partners, and the public to focus on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

Keeping our workplaces safe is always a priority for safety champions, but this week is a reminder to recommit, make a plan, and make safety stick - whatever industry you work in.

Looking for ideas? Here are 10 ideas to help you get started:

  • Host a fun internal activity or contest to inspire your employees to exercise their right to participate in workplace safety. Remind employees about the Internal Responsibility System.
  • Download and share Safety and Health Week graphics and find content suggestions in our toolkit
  • Have leadership demonstrate their commitment to workplace safety by sending an all-staff message about Safety and Health Week.
  • Make sure your workplace safety programs and policies are up to date, and take the opportunity to remind employees where they can find safety information.
  • Host a screening of one of our recorded safety webinars for your employees, on topics such as psychological health and safety or preventing sprain and strain injuries.
  • Listen to and share episodes of the WorkShift podcast, featuring some of Nova Scotia’s most inspirational workplace safety leaders.
  • Order a Workplace Safety Kit to refresh the safety signage in your workplace.
  • Use our Risk Mapping Tool to help identify, assess, and control injury hazards to help reduce injuries in your workplace.
  • Ensure your workplace is ready to help support employees in the event of an injury by building out or refreshing your return-to-work program.

Share your safety story on social media using #SafetyandHealthWeek, and tag us at @WorkSafeForLife.
